Historic Monument Avenue and Fan District Foundation
P.O. Box 4373, Richmond, Virginia 23220

The HMAFDF promotes the preservation and restoration of the buildings of Monument Avenue and in the Fan District.

  • by raising funds to undertake and complete preservation projects
  • by promoting educational programs, and
  • by developing recreational events to showcase urban living

Current Project

With the help of the City of Richmond, Councilman Bill Pantele, Virginia Commonwealth University and many Fan District residents, businesses and institutions, the Foundation raised the funds to replace street signs in the Fan District with new ones featuring a fan logo. The distinctive brown and green signs replaced a hodgepodge of different styles and signal visitors that they arrived in our exciting neighborhood!

  • Installation is complete throughout the Fan District from Pine to Mulberry on Grace, Park, Stuart, Hanover, Grove, Floyd and Main.
  • The few remaining original signs were maintained, and the ugly pipes that held some signs were replaced with historic reproduction poles.
  • Monument Avenue signs, which will feature a block number in the curved section at the top of the blades facing Monument, will be installed in October 2006.
  • The project inspired our neighbors in the Museum District to undertake a similar project, which will include the Boulevard.

List of 2004 Projects:

  • Provided a $10,000 grant for the development of software to make it possible for a citywide inventory to be taken of the city’s trees, starting with the Fan District. Read story in Style Magazine
  • Provide $7,250 towards the restoration of the Monroe Park Fountain, see related article at Monroe Park then click on FOUNTAIN link
