The Monument Avenue Preservation Society (MAPS)

The Monument Avenue Preservation Society was established to preserve the Avenue and to prevent the destruction of buildings. Monument Avenue is the only street in the United States to be named a national historic landmark and MAPS is the only organization dedicated solely to its preservation, the welfare of its residents, and the education of the public about its architecture, history and character.  The historic district reaches from Birch Street to Roseneath and includes Allen and Davis Avenues to the immediate south and north of Monument Avenue.

The purpose of MAPS is to
• Encourage preservation, restoration and orderly development of the historic district
• Review proposed architectural changes and additions to buildings in the historic district and make recommendations to the city’s Commission for Architectural Review
• Help beautify our neighborhood through public space projects and be a watchdog for inappropriate building use and care, and
• Give a voice to and promote the welfare of our residents through social, civic and educational endeavors.

Should you have any questions about life on the avenue, or the guidelines of the historic designation, feel free to contact one of the MAPS board members.  Here is the link to the city's Commission for Architectural Review (CAR). A list of our current board members and their contact information can be found at the link below.

We hope you will consider joining MAPS.  The dues are $30 per year per person and include an invitation to our annual meeting and cocktail party in February held at the home of one of our neighbors.

To join, please send a check payable to MAPS to Tom Thomson (MAPS Treasurer) at 2000 Monument Ave., Richmond, VA, 23220.
